Mount Manaslu is the eighth highest mountain in the world and, although it is considered one of the more technically approachable 8000-meter peaks, its extreme altitude still presents a serious challenge. A successful ascent demands thorough preparation, strong physical conditioning, and a well-planned acclimatization schedule.
The expedition follows the classic Northeast Face route, with the climb typically established through four high camps and supported by an experienced team of professional climbing Sherpas. The route is relatively direct and not excessively steep, with no major technical obstacles. The main challenges include navigating ice cliffs and seracs on the way to Camp 2, sections of exposed terrain approaching Camp 4, and the final snow arête leading to the summit. Despite its reputation as a “straightforward” 8000er, Manaslu remains a demanding high-altitude expedition that should not be underestimated.
Situated in the remote Gorkha region of Nepal, Manaslu—often called the “Mountain of the Spirit”—combines dramatic natural beauty with a rewarding high-altitude climbing experience. It is widely considered an ideal choice for mountaineers looking to progress to their first 8000-meter summit.
The standard ascent follows the Northeast Face, a route known for being less technical than many other peaks in this category. With manageable terrain, well-fixed ropes, and strong logistical support from experienced Sherpa teams, Manaslu offers a comparatively accessible path to extreme altitude. While the climb still requires solid physical conditioning and careful acclimatization, the route provides a good balance between challenge and safety.
What makes the Manaslu expedition truly special is the journey to the mountain itself. Climbers pass through pristine valleys, remote mountain villages, ancient monasteries, and stunning Himalayan landscapes before arriving at base camp. With fewer climbers than on Everest and a quieter, more exclusive environment, Manaslu delivers a genuine and immersive Himalayan adventure for those seeking both achievement and authenticity.

After breakfast, attend the official expedition briefing at Nepal’s Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, where final formalities and climbing permits are confirmed. This is an important step before heading into the mountains, ensuring all logistics and documentation are in place for the expedition.
The remainder of the day is free to enjoy the “bombardment of the senses” that is Kathmandu — a fascinating blend of ancient temples, incense-filled courtyards, bustling markets, and lively streets. Wander through colorful alleys, explore historic squares, or relax in one of the many cafés as you soak in the unique atmosphere of Nepal’s capital. Overnight at the hotel. (H, B)
Depart Kathmandu after breakfast for a scenic drive to Besisahar (760m), the traditional gateway to the Annapurna region.
The journey follows winding mountain highways alongside rushing rivers, terraced hillsides, and small rural villages, offering a glimpse into everyday life beyond the capital. After several hours on the road, arrive in Besisahar and settle into your lodge for the night, preparing for the next stage of the journey into the Himalaya.
Overnight in Besisahar.
From Besisahar, continue the journey by jeep toward Dharapani (1,860m).
The road becomes more rugged and adventurous, following the Marsyangdi River through narrow valleys, waterfalls, and traditional mountain villages. As you gain altitude, the landscape gradually shifts, with thicker forests giving way to more dramatic alpine scenery.
Upon arrival in Dharapani — a key junction on the Annapurna Circuit — settle into your lodge and enjoy your first real sense of being in the high Himalaya.
Begin your trek from Dharapani (1,860m), following the classic Annapurna trail as it gradually climbs through forests of pine and fir.
The path winds through traditional villages adorned with prayer flags and mani walls, reflecting the growing Tibetan influence as you move higher into the valley. With steady elevation gain and beautiful views of surrounding peaks, the walk offers a pleasant introduction to trekking at altitude.
Arrive in Tilije (2,300m), a charming stone-built village set above the river. Overnight in a local lodge.
rek from Tilije (2,300m) toward Bhimthang (3,720m), following the narrowing valley upstream.
The trail climbs steadily through dense rhododendron and pine forests before opening into wide alpine pastures. As you gain altitude, the scenery becomes increasingly dramatic, with snow-capped peaks rising above the valley and the air turning noticeably cooler and thinner.
After a rewarding ascent, arrive at Bhimthang, a beautiful high-altitude meadow surrounded by towering mountains — an ideal place to rest and acclimatize. Overnight in a lodge.
Today is dedicated to rest and proper acclimatization as you prepare for higher elevations. While it is a rest day, light activity is encouraged — short hikes to nearby ridges or viewpoints help the body adjust more effectively to the altitude. From these vantage points, enjoy impressive views of surrounding Himalayan peaks and the expansive glacial valley.
The remainder of the day can be spent relaxing, hydrating, and conserving energy for the days ahead. Overnight in the lodge.
An early start for one of the most demanding and rewarding days of the journey. Depart from Bhimthang (3,720m) and begin the steady ascent toward Larkya La Pass (5,160m).
The climb to the pass is gradual but sustained, crossing moraines and high alpine terrain as the landscape becomes increasingly stark and dramatic. Reaching the summit of Larkya La is a true highlight — prayer flags flutter in the wind, and vast Himalayan panoramas stretch in every direction.
From the pass, descend carefully along rocky trails and glacial valleys before continuing toward Samdo (3,872m). After a long and challenging day, arrive in this remote mountain village and settle into your lodge for a well-earned rest.
Today’s walk is shorter and more gradual, allowing the body to recover while still moving through spectacular high-altitude terrain. The trail follows wide alpine paths with expansive valley views and a strong Tibetan cultural influence visible in chortens, mani walls, and traditional stone houses.
As you descend slightly toward Sama Gaun, the dramatic presence of Manaslu dominates the skyline, signaling your deeper approach into the heart of the Himalaya. Overnight in a local lodge.
Depart from Sama Gaun and begin the steady ascent toward Manaslu Base Camp (4,700m).
The trail climbs gradually above the village, passing Birendra Lake and following glacial moraines as the landscape becomes increasingly rugged and barren. With every step, views of Manaslu grow more impressive, its massive snow-covered slopes rising dramatically above the valley.
As you gain altitude, the pace slows to allow proper acclimatization. Upon arrival at base camp, settle into your expedition camp, surrounded by towering Himalayan peaks — the true beginning of your high-altitude climbing adventure.
The trail climbs gradually above the village, passing the turquoise waters of Birendra Lake before traversing glacial moraines and increasingly rugged alpine terrain. As you gain height, the air becomes thinner and the views more dramatic, with Manaslu towering directly ahead.
This demanding but rewarding day brings you into the heart of the high Himalaya. Upon arrival at base camp, settle into your expedition tents and prepare for the climbing phase ahead.
These days are dedicated to the ascent of Manaslu, the world’s eighth-highest mountain. The climbing period is carefully planned to allow for proper acclimatization, rotation between camps, load carries, rest days, and ultimately a safe summit attempt.
From Base Camp, climbers establish higher camps along the normal route, gradually moving up and down the mountain to adapt to the altitude. The route typically involves glacier travel, fixed rope sections, steep snow slopes, and exposed ridgelines. Patience is essential, as weather conditions and team strength determine the summit window.
Life during this period revolves around monitoring forecasts, maintaining health, hydrating, and conserving energy. When a favorable weather window arrives, the team launches the summit push, ascending through the higher camps toward the 8,163m summit — a demanding but immensely rewarding objective in the high Himalaya.
After the summit attempt, descend carefully to Base Camp for rest and recovery.
After weeks on the mountain, it is time to dismantle Manaslu Base Camp. The morning is spent organizing equipment, sorting personal and group gear, and ensuring all waste is properly packed out in accordance with expedition and environmental regulations.
Tents are taken down, supplies are consolidated, and loads are prepared for porters and yaks. It is also a moment to reflect on the climb — the challenges faced, the summit attempt, and the shared experience on Manaslu (8,163m).
By the end of the day, Base Camp is cleared, leaving the site as it was found, and preparations are made for the trek back down valley.
Depart from Manaslu Base Camp (4,800m) and begin the descent back to Sama Gaun (3,541m).
After weeks spent in the high-altitude environment of base camp, the return trek feels noticeably easier as you lose elevation and the air grows thicker. The trail retraces the route past glacial moraines and alpine terrain, with expansive views of Manaslu gradually receding behind you.
Upon arrival in Sama Gaun, enjoy the comfort of a lodge, a warm meal, and the first real sense of returning to village life after your time on the mountain.
Depart from Sama Gaun and board a helicopter for a spectacular flight back to Kathmandu.
The aerial journey offers a final, unforgettable perspective of the Himalayan landscape — soaring above deep valleys, remote villages, glacial rivers, and towering snow-covered peaks. It’s a dramatic and rewarding conclusion to your Manaslu adventure.
Upon arrival in Kathmandu, transfer to your hotel and enjoy the comfort of the city once again after weeks in the mountains.
Enjoy a leisure day in Kathmandu, giving you time to relax and recover after your expedition.
You may choose to explore cultural highlights such as ancient temples and bustling markets, stroll through the lively streets of Thamel, shop for souvenirs, or simply unwind at a café and reflect on your time in the Himalaya. This is also an ideal opportunity for a celebratory meal or to explore more of the valley at your own pace.
Overnight at the hotel. (H, B)
