Mount Kenya boasts the impressive twin peaks of Batian (5199m) and Nelion (5189m), making it the second tallest mountain in Africa. The trek to the base is both easy and picturesque, with most hikers stopping at Point Lenana (4985m). However, we’re all about reaching the highest points! Get ready for an exciting journey through untouched nature as we take the road less traveled. Our 9-day expedition is designed to give you a solid shot at summiting Batian (5199m) in a reasonable timeframe, truly conquering Mount Kenya.  

For this climbing adventure, we’ll tackle Mount Kenya using one of the standard routes. In the summer, the North Face Normal Route takes you straight to Batian’s summit. In winter, we’ll first ascend to Nelion and then traverse over to Batian. Both routes feature sections that reach up to UIAA 5th degree difficulty, offering an alpine experience with stunning and thrilling passages.

• Day 1-2

  Arrival in Kenya
  You’ll arrive by flight and head to your hotel in Nairobi, where you’ll enjoy a bed & breakfast setup. Take the day to unwind, explore Nairobi (check out the National Park and Bomas), do some last-minute shopping for snacks, and get in some climbing training at Lukenya, which is about an hour's drive from the city. In the evening, we’ll have dinner together, go over the tour details, and meet everyone in the group.
• Day 3-5

  Trekking and acclimatization
  Along the way, our mountain guides and fellow climbers will chat about the ascent and go over some essential climbing techniques (like belaying and commands).
• Day 6

  Climbing on Mount Kenya
  In winter, we’ll trek up to the Austrian Hut, and from there, we can tackle Point Lenana (4985m). In summer, we’ll start from Shipton's Camp, where we can either do a training hike or attempt the ascent of Batian.
• Day 7

  Climbing Mount Kenya
  Today, we're gearing up to tackle Batian, which stands at 5199 meters. We’ll rise early to hit the trail as the sun comes up. In winter, we kick off our climb on the Nelion Normal Route, which starts off pretty chill, allowing us to gain altitude quickly. After passing MacKinder's Gendarme, we hit a crucial rope section, then navigate some rocky terrain with a couple of spots rated UIAA 4rd degree difficulty before reaching the summit of Nelion at 5189 meters. Before we can make our way to Batian, we need to rappel down into the Gate of the Mists and then tackle a third ridge to reach Batian. For the way down from Nelion, we’ll rappel down the Austrian rescue line. In summer, the first rope section presents a key challenge (UIAA 5-) that can leave your fingers feeling numb. After that, we’ll navigate through a couloir to the amphitheatre, keeping an eye out for falling rocks. We’ll then make our way over Firmin's Tower to the west ridge, which stretches on past Shipton's Notch to the main summit of Batian. The descent will follow the same route, involving some rappelling and climbing down.

  Descent
  We trek down to the National park gate and drive back to Nairobi, flight back home.
